Over the last hundred years, our hallowed parkland has matured into one of the region's most respected courses, serving as a sanctuary for those who value the deep traditions and refined competitive spirit of the game. Our legacy is built on a century of milestones, cultivating a community where prestige and passion meet.
A Century of Local Pride
From a Town Hall Vision to a Premier Estate
The story of Widnes Golf Club began at the Town Hall in 1923, leading to our official 1924 opening where Dr G C Clayton struck the first drive. Influenced by members of Woolton Golf Club, our original layout on Lower House Farm was quickly embraced. While early years saw challenges like the loss of our loyal greenkeeper's horse, Dolly, the club’s heart remained strong, fostering an active Ladies' Section and a welcoming environment that flourished through every era of play.
Heritage and Growth
Our parkland evolved from 9 to 18 holes by 1929, persevering through wartime and shifts in local land ownership. The 1960s marked a pivotal turn when we welcomed new members from the former Mersey Golf Club and finally secured our freehold from ICI for £5,000. This independence sparked a new era of clubhouse refurbishments, creating the refined social hub we enjoy today. Overlooking the 18th green, we continue to celebrate a legacy of accuracy, friendship, and sporting excellence.
