A maximum playing handicap of 15 exists and players must be of a minimum 18 years of age.

There are 8 players in each team. Each match therefore comprises of 8 games of singles matchplay with a point available for each game. There are therefore 8 points available in each match.

There is an individual prize for the best player of the season in the league. For this prize, points are awarded at each game a player is involved. (Away win - 4pts, Home win - 3pts, Half Away - 2pts and Half at Home - 1pt). The individual winner is the player accumulating the most points in the season.

A Finals Day is held at one of the clubs (rotating through all clubs) usually in September, with a presentation after of all the prizes for the season. By tradition a member of the host club acts as President of the league for that year.

Finals Day consists of 9 man teams as well as the club Captain with the best 6 scores from each club aggregated to give the Club’s total. Only players who have played in the league that season are eligible for their score to count towards their team score.

There is also a prize for the lowest gross and best nett (highest stableford score) on the day.

The league is noted for its social aspect and whilst very competitive most players are involved because of the friendly atmosphere in games. All Matches are played between 5-6pm tee in the week followed by a 1 or 2 course meal. (Widnes play most of their home games on Wednesday evenings).

If you are interested in playing for the Widnes South Lancs Team, are 18 or over and have a playing handicap of 15 or less please contact the Widnes SLL Team Captain. Team sheets, results etc are posted in the foyer to the TV lounge, opposite the Toilets.

South Lancs League Summary

The South Lancs League has now concluded for the season 2023, finishing with Finals Day on the 3rd September!

It’s been a most enjoyable season with some great tussles against the other 8 clubs in the league ! With 8 team points available in each game , Widnes GC finished a very creditable runners up , with 71 points from their 16 games , averaging 4.43 points per game and behind Hindley Hall who won the league for the second year in succession!
Our team had 8 wins, 2 halves and 6 losses from our 16 games! Winning doubles over Gathurst and Grange Park were notable achievements and emphatic wins over Wigan and Haydock helped our cause, as did a strong finish with 3 wins from the last 4 games!

In total, 22 players represented the club and I thank each and everyone for playing their part !

(On an individual level, 4 points are awarded for an away win, 3 for a home win, 2 for a half away and 1 for a half at home ) . Neil Scahill amassed the most points with 31 points from his 15 games ! Well done Neil!
Some naturally played more games than others with a loyal core backed up with others who played a few games and some who were drafted in at the last minute! (Well done to Rowan Dowd who played every game !)

Finals Day last week was won by Leigh GC, ( this is an end of SLL competition and gathering of all the clubs) , Widnes GC finished 3rd overall with our own Phil Glover making the lowest gross !

Well done to all and here’s to next SLL season when we’ll try to go one better!
